The idea to open up an organic health food store in the Lower East Side came about in the 1990s when Isaac Tapiero, a dancer and real estate investor from Israel, decided he wanted to make a change in the neighborhood.
At the time, the Lower East Side was a gritty place known for its bargain clothing, bodegas and illegal drugs. Isaac wanted to open a place where people could detoxify from a harsh environment by eating healthy foods and relaxing in a spiritual environment. He wanted to promote a conscious lifestyle that is kind towards people and the environment.
In 2001, Isaac recruited his nephew, Marco Megira, to renovate the ground floor space at 177 Ludlow St., which used to house a bodega. With the help of local construction workers, Marco built a three-level store with an Internet café on the mezzanine and a garden lounge on the top level. He used mostly wood to construct floors, tables, counters and shelves.
Since opening in December 2001, EarthMatters has gradually expanded its product selection to include fresh organic produce, organic groceries, vitamins and herbal supplements, environmentally-friendly household supplies, toiletries and cosmetics, and more. In addition, the store's "juice bar" sells hot food, cold salads, sandwiches, smoothies and juices.
